Somewhere between the pitch decks and the press releases, ONDC became either the saviour of small retail or an overhyped plumbing project — depending on who you ask. The truth is more useful than either version: the open network is real infrastructure carrying real orders, and it still doesn't hand you the one thing the giants never will — a customer relationship of your own.

What ONDC actually changes — and what it doesn't

Give the network its due. ONDC unbundles e-commerce the way UPI unbundled payments: buyer apps surface products from any seller app on the network, so a neighbourhood store's catalogue can sit beside a national brand's in the same search. Where marketplaces quietly take a quarter to a third of order value once commissions, ads and fulfilment stack up, ONDC's all-in cost is a small fraction — the network charges a fee, not rent.

Here's what it doesn't change. The buyer still opens somebody else's app. Discovery inside ONDC buyer apps runs on the same physics as any marketplace search — price, rating, delivery promise — so you're again competing for attention on a shelf you don't control. And when the order lands, the customer's loyalty points at the app they used, not the store that shipped.

The position that actually compounds

None of this argues for ignoring ONDC — it argues for placing it correctly. Treat the network as rented top-of-funnel: incremental orders at lower fees, worth having. But rented reach doesn't compound. What compounds is a storefront you own — your Shopify or WooCommerce store — where the repeat buyer lands directly, the data is yours, and your margin isn't renegotiated by an algorithm every quarter.

The historical objection to 'just sell on your own site' was logistics. Marketplaces shipped; you couldn't. That was the last advantage to fall: a multi-courier layer now gives an independent store the same live rates, same-day riders and COD rails the giants enjoy — without handing over the keys.

Marketplaces rent you customers. ONDC rents you shelf space. Your own storefront is still the only address you own.

Pure Parcel gives your own store platform-grade shipping — live rates across hyperlocal and national carriers, COD built in.

The playbook: four moves

1

List on ONDC for discovery

Join through a seller app and price for the network's lower fees. Treat every ONDC order as top-of-funnel acquisition — a first meeting, not the relationship.

2

Move the repeat purchase into the box

An insert card, a WhatsApp opt-in, a QR code to your own storefront — the parcel is the one channel where you're the only advertiser.

3

Make your own store ship like the giants

Same-day hyperlocal riders inside the city, national carriers beyond it, live rate comparison on every order. When owned shipping works, the marketplace's biggest edge evaporates.

4

Keep COD open everywhere

Cash on delivery still decides conversion outside the metros. Collect and reconcile remittances across carriers from one place, not a folder of PDFs.

The bottom line

ONDC deserves the fair version: real volume, lower take rates, a genuinely open door. But a door somebody else holds is still somebody else's. Use the network for reach — build on the storefront you own. Pure Parcel exists for the second half of that sentence: the shipping layer that lets an independent store deliver like a platform.
